A fascinating view of artistic life in New York City at the start of the city's rapid growth northward on Manhattan Island. Newly minted titans of commerce, including John Jacob Astor, began to bestow cultural beneficence on the city, patronizing the likes of John James Audubon and institutions. The New York Mirror reflected that growth, while also promoting literature: The Mirror was the first to publish a young Walt Whitman's (age 15), and the first in the U.S. to publish Charles Dickens.
