Washington DC: GPO, 1898. First Edition. Leather bound. 8vo. Pp. 124. Frontispiece shows a Russian surveyor accompanied by Eskimo guides, all mounted on reindeer. Lavishly illustrated with black and white photography, and line drawings. Marbled endpapers. Three-quarter black leather binding over green cloth-covered boards. Marbled edges. Binding shows some wear commensurate with age, notably scuffing to leather and bumps (please see photos). In sum, a sturdy, well-bound copy with the name F. G. Clarke stamped on spine. Very Good +. Item #2126

Jackson was General Agent of Education in Alaska at time of publication. This comprehensive report follows up on his early 1890s humanitarian mission in which he and Captain Michael A. Healy of the US Revenue Cutter Bear imported reindeer from Siberia to Alaska as a possible solution to First People's chronic food shortage. A permanent reindeer station was established in 1892 and named in honor of Secretary of the Interior Henry M. Teller. This is one of the earlier reports, which was published annually for several years. Contains rich anthropological details on Eskimo life, and natural science information. The photos are quite good, and the map is fresh. While reports for other years are available, the report covering 1897 is scarce.
