50 Northwest Artists A Critical Selection of Painters and Sculptors Working in the Pacific Northwest

San Francisco: Chronicle Books, (1983). First Edition. Hardcover. Oblong 4to. Pp. 115, [5]. Compiled by Ed Marquand. Illustrated with a Marsha Burns b&w photo of each artist, along with a representative work in color. In addtion, each artist provides a statement about his or her work. Index. Bound in cloth, gilt lettering on front cover and spine. In a decorative dust jacket featuring a work by Fay Jones. Slight waviness to text block, and in the index a previous owner has corrected the listing for the Hodges/Banks Gallery to "Linda Hodges," providing the changed address. Very Good / Fine. Item #1745

While technically not a series, the publisher presented at least three similar titles, the first being 50 West Coast Artists, 1981. Texas and New York followed suit. The softcover editions are readily available, but the hardcover with dust jacket for each title is scarce, and especially so if signed by the author or photographer. This copy has the signature of author Bruce Guenther, then curator of contemporary art at the Seattle Art Museum, and photographer Marsha Burns. The current resurgence of interest in the photography of Burns is more than deserved. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable clear, archival sleeve.
