Adams provides a fine introduction to the narrative, which was a mendicant designed to illustrate redemption of a sinner. Patterson sailed with Commander William Bainbridge on the first US ship into Constantinople. The Sultan was intrigued by news of a new country called the United States of America, and allowed him safe travel through Islamic waters. Patterson references a slave ship, John Jewitt and his ordeal at Nootka, and the customs of Fijians.
