While a large limitation, this is a surprisingly fresh copy. The fiftieth book published in the publisher's Rivers of America Series, this edition is labeled "the Lewis & Clark Edition." We wonder why it took 50 rivers before the mighty Columbia was finally considered for the series. In our heirarchy, its America's most important western river. Captain Robert Gray's discovery of the Columbia River allowed the US to lay claim to what became the Oregon Territory north to the 49th parallel. The Columbia carried the American flag, purportedly the one sewn by Betsy Ross, when it became the first US vessel to circumnavigate the globe.
