Provides a history of the Whitman's missionary effort and tragic demise, and the growth of the private college. A major force in the development of Whitman as the preeminent private college in Washington State, Penrose served as college president for an era of growth, educating, among others, Chief Justice William O. Douglas. In his self-agrgrandizing "Go East Young Man" Douglas refers to Penrose as a "stuffed shirt" but the true history reveals Douglas cozying up to Penrose, mainly as a means of getting close to his Whitman co-ed daughter. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable, archival sleeve.
