First edition translated by the author’s great-grandson. Included are his annotations and historical introductory material. This remains the most vital account of John Jacob Astor's ill-fated effort at the mouth of the Columbia River. Gabriel Franchere was a key figure stationed at Astoria. When Washington Irving published his account, Franchere felt compelled to publish his narrative, based on his extensive notes and thereby correcting Irving's errors. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable, archival sleeve.
