Bindings with elaborate and notable art nouveau gilt decoration, Former owner Mary Corning Winslow Black (1873-1943) was the daughter of John Winslow, a partner of Corning. Winslow built the USS Monitor. Mary Black's husband, Clarence Black, was a co-founder of Cadillac Motor Company. They moved to Seattle for an unknown period, joining Clarence's brother Frank Black, then Seattle mayor (one of Seattle's shortest-lived mayors ... he held the title for three weeks).

Seattle Hardware was one of the early Black family businesses, another was Black Manufacturing. Clarence and Mary then moved Santa Barbara, with Mary studying in Carmel and, after her husband's death, occupying and restoring Monterey's Abrego Adobe (still standing).
