Bound in black cloth over scarlet cloth; spine lettered and decorated in gilt, publisher's transparent wraps. Clean and fresh throughout, but for leaf 657/658 in the first volume, which has a closed tear, evidently a flaw from the printing or binding process. In the black paper-covered slipcase, gold paper title label. Inscribed by the author to ffep of vol I: "Inscribed for -- -- / by the author / [signed] Hervey Allen". Also signed on ffep of vol II.
