Pehr Hallsten was born in Sweden in 1897 and moved to Seattle in the 1930s A late-bloomer, he began painting in 1953, after encouragement from Mark Tobey, his life partner for 25 years In Seattle, he was represented by Otto Seligman and Francine Seders. His renown spread quickly, however, propelled by generous overviews of his work by Dore Ashton, John Ashbery and Michael Courtois. After a show at the Galerie Jeanne Bucher in Paris, his works were collected by Joseph Hirshhorn, Vincent Price, Vieira da Silva and, back in Seattle, by Richard Fuller of the Seattle Art Museum. In 1961 he exhibited at the Carnegie's 1961 International, which precipitated a one-man show at the Carnegie Institute in 1962. In 1974 the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (BC) mounted the most comprehensive exhibit of Hallsten's work, which also published an accompanying illustrated catalog. In 1965 Pehr Hallsten passed away in Basel, Switzerland, the city to which he and Tobey emigrated just a few years earlier, after suffering from diabetes complications. Bookseller inventory J09171H.
