The unique and beautiful product of a talented designer and illuminator, dedicated to the stellar Paris cabaret diseuse who caused a sensation in her early appearances circa 1890. Guilbert (1869-1944) primarily performed songs written for her until illness in 1896 forced her to temporarily withdraw from the stage. By 1900 she was researching and developing a new repertoire of literary songs, traditional French ballads and folk songs which she continued to perform and teach for the remainder of her career. The present collection is from that era. The first section includes eight "Old French Songs," the second has four "Composed Songs" by Richepin & Gounod, Xanrof, Béranger, and Laforgue & Waldteufel.

Amerian born, French schooled Edward Jabès (1903-1983) was a San Francisco Bay professional singer and diseur who painted as a hobby.
