Bruant (1851 - 1925) was a French cabaret singer, comedian, and nightclub owner, credited as the creator of the chanson réaliste. In posters by Toulouse-Lautrec he is depicted in his signature red scarf and black cape. This was the second of three volumes collecting his songs and monologues, the first two with Steinlen illustrations.

Swiss artist and Montmartre resident Th. A. Steinlen was an habitué of Paris café-concerts with Toulouse-Lautrec.
