As noted in former owner James G. Swan's 1885 manuscript on the title page, the author was Hawaiian consul general to Great Britain from 1856 until his death in 1897. Founder of a marine insurance firm and author of A Manual of Marine Insurance, he was also father of the Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.

James Gilchrist Swan (1818-1900) was an Indian agent in Washington Territory and lived among the Makah for three years. His The Northwest Coast, or, Three Years' Residence in Washington Territory published in 1857, remains a cornerstone title of Pacific Northwest history.
