James Gilchrist Swan (1818-1900), a pioneering ethnographer based in Port Townsend, Washington Territory, arrived from the Gold Rush of California to the territories in 1852 and served as a teacher and Indian agent at the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay prior to authoring this seminal work, the first published ethnography on the Haida people of British Columbia and Queen Charlotte Islands. The work briefly describes their carvings, tattoo designs, and cultural motifs, accompanied by his own illustrations.
