Illustrated with black & white photography and a fold-out map at rear. Bound in three-quarter blue cloth over light blue paper-covered boards; spine lettered in gilt; gilt rules and borders on cover and spine. Rear board with a faint stain the size of a chickpea. Of an author's autograph edition of 500 hand-numbered copies, signed by the author and including pieces of cloth from the wings of the plane Josephine Ford this is 216. Fine. Item #12657 Byrd's account of flying across the North Pole, which immediately attracted skeptics who found discrepancies between the distance and elapsed time of travel. As a contribution to the lengthy shelf of polar literature, this volume stands out as an especially elaborate production with good paper, a handsome binding and other flourishes, found here in exemplary condition.
The fabric relics are housed in a compartment on the front free endpaper behind clear plastic that is cracked, as usual.
