A pivotal figure in 19th C. English literature, Borrow -- the British traveler, Bible salesman and honorary Gypsy -- provided an antidote to the era's maudlin sentimentality; thus, a connection to Defoe and Fielding and, incidentally, an influence on A. J. Liebling and Joseph Mitchell. This a handsome set of the first edition of Borrow's opus.
