In the 1950s Graves grew his beard to ensure against gainful employment in the then-button-downed "real" world. A photograph of the bearded Graves is featured on the rear panel of the dust jacket. This monograph, lavish treatment for a Seattle painter who came to prominence in the 1940s, is also the first major tribute to the artist. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
