The author, Mary Davis Wallis, was the wife sea captain Benjamin Wallis of Salem, Massachusetts. For the 1840s and into the 1850s, Captain Wallis dominated trade in beche-de-mer -- sea cucumber - between Fiji and Manila. For the period 1844 - 1849, Wallis brought along his wife Mary, who left us her Christian-influenced account, published here.
