Gamble was the grandson of the Procter and Gamble co-founder. His passion for Chinese culture and history was sparked by a 1908 tour with his parents. He returned often, sometimes under the auspices of the YMCA, which was prominent in China for its outreach. Besides photography, Gamble engaged in sociological studies, notably represented by his book, How Chinese Families Live in Peiping (1933). A bright, fresh copy, well preserved.
