Half calf over marbled paper covered boards, rebacked retaining the spine with gilt titled morocco lettering piece and rules. Cover edges chipped and rubbed through in places; front hinge starting, top edge soiled, very light foxing to plates with offsetting to facing leaves, light dampstain to frontis. upper corner, a few leaves with mellowed dog-ear creases, tight binding. Pencil signature of previous owner George Naish and date 27-VIII-47 on front and back free endpapers. Bookplate of noted maritime collector Frederick Ellison on the front pastedown. Laid in photocopy of a 1973 Naish-signed typescript letter commenting on this book's appendix "Remarks and Observations on the Loss of his Majesty's Ship Royal George, at Spithead, in August 1782." Maritime historian George P. B. Naish (1909-1977) was Honorary Secretary to the Society for Nautical Research at Greenwich from 1947.
