Vol II contains eight large black & white maps, some of them drawn by J. G. This volume on distinguished military engineer and future civil war general John G. Barnard's (1815-1882) survey of possible routes over Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec was intended to inform the American public on possible advantages to building a railway across the isthmus, thereby providing another link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In addition to engineering reports, the book includes discussions of the area's natural history, touching on anthropological aspects, of the region.
