Newspaperman Beaton (1874-1951) arrived in Seattle in 1903. His projected photo history of the Denny Regrades became a deeply-researched story of the physical and commercial development of the city. Many of the photos, arranged in decorative settings, present then-and-now views illustrating the rapid changes. With fine printing on high quality paper in a deluxe binding designed by Beaton to be "a book worthy of the subject." TWENEY, 5; SMITH, 680; SOLIDAY I 1436.

Previous owner's signature is that of Bernard Pelly, the first British Consul to Seattle, father of US Congressman Thomas Minor Pelly, and son-in-law of Seattle mayor Dr Thomas Minor, who figures prominently in the book.
