An invaluable account of one of the first American explorers, consisting mainly of selections from Ledyard's journals and letters. As a sailor on Cook's third voyage he visited the Pacific, the Northwest Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii. At the behest of Thomas Jefferson he attempted to cross over to America by traversing Russia, only to be arrested and deported. He died while exploring the Nile in 1789.
