This set was owned by Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple (1822-1901), the first Episophal Bishop of Minnesota, and a prominent advocate for Native Americans. Whipple served as a missionary to the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples; in 1862 Whipple met with President Lincoln to advocate against the deportation or extermination of the Dakota.
