Founded in the 1850s, the Maine Central Railroad at the time of this publication was continuing to expand through the leasing of additional branch lines. In 1901, year of this report, the Maine Central bought the formerly-leased Knox and Lincoln Railroad, which operated from Rockland to a ferry connection at Woolwich, thence known as the Maine Central Railroad Rockland Branch.
