In the wake of the Sputnik crisis and perceived technology gap at the end of 1957, "The Boeing Scientific Research Laboratories were established in January 1958 to maintain adequate scientific knowledge and understanding in areas related to present and future systems. Modern laboratory facilities, designed specifically for this organization will be completed in mid-1960."
