Firsthand account of the 19th-century struggle for women's employment and gender equality by Zakrzewska, a Polish-American physician. With the bookplate of Anita E. Tyng (1838 – 1913), a trailblazing Rhode Island surgeon who, along with Dr. Lucy E. Sewall, both graduates of medical colleges, sought admission to Harvard. Their applications were dismissed with the assurance that Harvard had room for no women in any department of the university.
